10 Essentials to Keep on Hand When You Move

While most of your belongings should be safely packed away in moving boxes, there are some essentials that you’ll want to have on hand for moving day, as well as some items that need to be easily accessible to ensure a smooth transition from one home to the next.

  1. Extra Boxes & Tape

Inevitably, there will be things you need to pack at the last minute, and running out to the hardware store to buy more boxes is an added stress you don’t need on moving day. Make sure you have a couple of extra boxes on hand, in a few different sizes, as well as a tape gun and marker for noting what’s in the box.

  1. Small Tool Kit

Put together a small tool kit of the essentials you’ll need to disassemble and reassemble furniture. Common tools include a hammer, pliers, a set of Allen wrenches, and a Phillips head and flat head screwdriver. You’ll also want a box cutter and scissors for opening boxes and new packaging.

  1. Garbage Bags & Cleaning Supplies

Moving can be messy, so make sure you’ve got garbage bags on hand to get rid of any trash you accumulate before and after the move, or to toss out items you’ve decided you want to get rid of before you leave. You’ll also want to keep a few basic cleaning supplies handy, such as all-purpose cleaner, paper towels and disinfectant wipes.

  1. Paper Products & Utensils

Whether you’re eating pizza on moving day or take-out your first night in your new home, you’ll be glad you have some paper products and disposable utensils around. Pick up a package of paper plates and bowls, grab some plastic cups and utensils, and have extra napkins and paper towels on hand to clean up any spills.

  1. First Aid & Medications

Accidents can happen, so it’s best to be prepared with a few basic first aid essentials, like band-aids, peroxide and antibacterial ointment. You’ll also want to make sure you can easily access any prescription drugs you take, as well as over-the-counter essentials, such as ibuprofen or aspirin, allergy medications and antacids.

  1. Toiletries & Toilet Paper

There’s nothing more frustrating than waking up on moving day and realizing you packed all the toilet paper, or your contact lens solution is tucked away in an unreachable box. Set aside an essentials box of items you’ll need the last few nights in your old place and the first few nights in your new home. Include hand soap, toothbrushes and other personal hygiene items, and don’t forget the toilet paper.

  1. Bedding & Clothing

No one wants to sleep on a bare mattress or use their rolled-up clothes for a pillow on the first night in a new house. Make sure you can quickly get to sheets, blankets and pillows to ensure a good night’s sleep, and set aside sleepwear and at least one change of clothes in a duffel bag or small suitcase.

  1. Snacks & Beverages

Moving can work up an appetite, so don’t pack up all your granola bars and bottled water just yet. You’ll want to have some snacks and beverages on hand, especially if you’re moving with kids. Consider packing a cooler and, if you’re moving with pets, make sure you’ve got enough food and treats for a day or two, as well as their water bowl and leash.

  1. Chargers & Entertainment

Let’s face it, most of us can’t live without our phones, and that’s especially true on moving day when you need to be able to communicate with others. Keep your chargers accessible and, if you have children, you may want to include items that will keep them entertained and happy, such as games, books, or movies on a laptop.

  1. Important Documents & Valuables

Keep important documents, including passports, driver’s licenses, insurance papers and medical records, with you during the move. You’ll also need to be able to access items like cash, debit and credit cards for buying gas, food and snacks, and to cover any other moving expenses.
